Colorful Wood Duck

A colorful duck of wooded swamps and streamsides, many people consider the Wood Duck the most beautiful of all waterfowl. Their personality is shy and skittish. This image captured on a mid-January day in Portland, Oregon at the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden.

Wood Ducks pair up in January, and most birds arriving at the breeding grounds in the spring are already paired. The Wood Duck is the only North American duck that regularly produces two broods in one year.
