Secretive Bittern

The American Bittern - part of the heron family - is usuallywell-hidden in bogs, marshes and wet meadows. Usually solitary, itwalks stealthily among cattails or bullrushes. If it senses that it hasbeen seen, the American Bittern becomes motionless, with its billpointed upward, causing it to blend into the reeds. This bird seen near Portland, Oregon.
