Tiger Lily

In Asian countries, the tiger lily is grown as a root crop and buds are removed before the beautiful flowers bloom, as this encourages the growth of bigger bulbs. When cooked this lily's bulbs are purportedly similar in taste to turnips or potatoes.

Although the flower buds can be eaten too, the pollen can be toxic so opened flowers must be cooked well.

The tiger lily has also appeared frequently in myth. Lilies in general are associated with the planet Venus, the water element and the goddesses Venus, Juno, Mpethys and Kwan Y'in. The most prominent meanings attributed to the tiger lily are wealth, pride and prosperity. The orange lilies are also commonly referred to as representations of passionate love and have been associated with the phrase, "I dare you to love me."
